2007 Folsom Street Fair Beneficiary

THANKS to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success!

It's barely spring but time already to start recruiting volunteers for our summer events!  

This year we've been selected as a major beneficiary for Folsom Street Events which puts on the Up Your Alleyth, Magnitude dance party on Saturday, September 29th, and the big daddy of them all, Folsom Street Fair on Sunday, September 30th.   Last time we were a beneficiary we received over $20,000! street fair on Sunday, July 29

We'll need to provide volunteers for each event but right now we're concentrating on getting an early start with filling 25 positions at Up Your Alley (otherwise known as Dore Alley Street Fair).  Volunteers will need to attend an orientation on Thursday, July 19th at 7pm or Saturday, July 21st at 1:30pm.  So take a look at the jobs listed below and if you can volunteer with us, please let us know by emailing me at mason <at> dscs.org with:

Up Your Alley

Strenuous work involving unloading trucks and lifting or pushing heavy objects. Might also require some messy clean-up work (gloves will be provided). If you have physical handicaps, a bad back, are squeamish or plan on being out all night before the fair then this job is not for you.

Secure fair grounds before sun-up, be the eyes and ears of FSE all day. Use radios to communicate information about illegal vendors, inappropriate behavior, emergencies, shortages and other problems to HQ. You will be on your feet for all of your shift.  Must speak English clearly and have street smarts, have firm but polite people skills and know how to exercise good judgment.

Must be a board member or a high-level staff person from organization.  These people are counting the money.  Must be trusted with large amounts of cash in a secure tent, out of sight.  Must be able to add and count.

Work with the Sisters to pump $$$ out of fairs attendees. Hand out stickers to people making donations and encourage EVERYONE to make a donation before they enter the fair. Highly visible job. You should be good at door to door sales and car wash fund raiser talk. You will be on your feet and out in the sun for all of your shift. A good job for happy, shiny, trustworthy, vocal people who can get into their job, dress up and look outrageous with the Sisters.

Check-in volunteers, manage requests for volunteers, hand out badges, some ‘gofer' work.  Be good under pressure and have a strong working knowledge of the alphabet.  This is a good job for people with mobility problems or who can't be out in the sun.

Requires heavy lifting to supply liquor, soda, and water to beverage booths.  Throughout the day monitoring inventory levels and re-supply of stock/ice.  At the end of the day pick-up unused inventory, inventory control and sign off of beverage partners.  You will be using a radio to communicate with the beverage manager.  Must be able to lift 40lbs and be able to work in the sun all day.  Ability to read/follow directions and take/record accurate inventories.  Should be over 21 years of age.

Set-up, maintain and clean-up food area for volunteers and staff in HQ.  Also deliver food and drink to staff as needed around the fair grounds.  A good job for people with mobility problems or who can't be out in the sun.

Will be monitoring recycle bins.  Will not have to sort through bags of garbage all day but might have to move an object tossed into the wrong bin into the correct bin.  We'll provide gloves.  May also have to collect and flatten boxes.  Not a job for princesses.

Extremely important job! Must make sure the fair grounds are put back the way they we found them - a clean empty street. Break down HQ, sweep, pick-up trash, move tables, load trucks, etc. May require heavy lifting. Must wear gloves (provided) and should not be afraid to get dirty, work hard & move very, very fast. Not for people with bad backs, etc.
